Atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a long lasting (chronic) inflammatory disease that causes persistent and often severe itching and redness of the skin. It tends to flare sometimes. It can be irritating but it's not contagious. Chronic itching and inflammation sometimes affect quality of life.
The pathological changes include thickening of the epidermis with an increase in the number of lymphocytes, eosinophils and mast cells. Exaggerated cutaneous response is seen to environmental allergens such as house dust mite proteins. Management focuses on relieving symptoms, restoring moisture to dry skin, and minimizing allergic contact reactions.
