Types of alopecia:

Most commonly patients develop round or oval bald patches in the scalp or beard area.Some patients also notice nail changes like dents, ridges or brittle nails.

The main types are:

  • Alopecia areata: Bald patch is noticed anywhere on the body, including the scalp, beard area, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, inside your nose, or ears.
  • Alopecia totalis: The person loses all hair on the scalp, so the scalp is completely bald
  • Alopecia universalis: The person loses all hair, leaving the entire body hairless. This is rare.

Management of Alopecia Areata

  • Local application of Tacrolimus / Corticosteroids/Minoxidil is usually advised on the affected bald patch and its periphery.
  • Contact immunotherapy is given in certain cases
  • Oral medications including corticosteroids or steroid sparing agents like methotrexate / azathioprine or JAK inhibitors are offered as per the condition and age of the patient.
